The problem may be that your destination disk does not support
symlinks. Can you make one "manually"? If this is the problem, then
try upgrading to the newest stable version and using the
--exclude-special-files option. Any symlink information won't be
preserved however. You can also try the newest development version.
It writes metadata to a file so you should be able to backup symlinks
and such even if the destination file system doesn't support them.
