Here is my 2 cents:
  • Long file names are not a problem for rdiff-backup
  • 'Foreign' characters should not be a problem provided they are properly supported on your Windows command line. If you can view the file name correctly from the command line then it should work for rdiff-backup. If not, you may need to add some additional options to Windows...
  • Maybe you don't have sufficient permissions to write to the destination (g:/_rdiffBAK)? Especially likely if it is a network drive.
  • I would not use rdiff-backup to backup Windows c:, I regard rdiff-backup (for Windows) as a 'data' backup tool not a 'system' backup tool. I would focus on backing up %USERPROFILE% with some exclusions to prevent backup of temporary data.
  • I would also suggest that it is easier for ongoing maintenance point of view to have several smaller repositories rather than one huge one, even if this means running rdiff-backup more than once to complete a backup session.
  • In general, rdiff-backup works well *from* Windows, but not so well *to* Windows. If the above suggestions don't help, consider backup to a Linux-based machine - for instance with TimeDicer, which I wrote and which uses rdiff-backup.

Hello...

I tryed to use rdiff-backup in Windows XP. (In my ubuntu works prefectly)
When I start backup I got WindowsError: [Error 5] Acess denied in
destination name/path.
And other problem seems to be long file names and foregin characters in
filename.
How to proceed.
(I realy like rdiff backup reverse diff scheme and can't find some other
similar software for backup in win)

Slavko...

Here is terminal output:

G:\>g:/_rdiff/rdiff-backup --no-acls -v4 --include-globbing-filelist
list.txt c: g:/_rdiffBAK
