Is there any reason why directory indexes are forbidden at
(and also at* in general?)

This user suggests it is inconvenient and could be activated.

Summary: How can I enable directory indexes?

I would like to provide an automatically generated index of some directories
of my homepage. I tried to put 'Options Indexes' into .htaccess but this does
not seem to have any effect.

What are the reasons to disable directory indexes sidewide? Everybody can
visit the CVS so privacy can not be obtained by such a configuration.
