I can do the former without thinking:
for i in *; do diff -ru /someotherplace/$i $i > $i.diff; done

The latter is more complicated (faking commits, handling deletions,
etc.), is altering data (so there's risk) and maybe people want to
reproduce commits a bit more nicely.
