If you want to help GNU projects (e.g. awk/sed/tar/coreutils etc.),
I'd suggest finding a project that interests you, and then offering help in the 
project's mailing list.

A short tutorial about how to start helping a GNU project (written
specifically for GNU Coreutils, but relevant to most other GNU projects):

Most projects have a mailing list - you can write to the mailing list and ask
what is the best way to contribute.
For example, if you’re interested in helping the “FreeDink” role-playing
game, the GNU Savannah website lists the address of the FreeDink mailing list
(Despite the mailing list having ‘bug-‘ in its name, it can be used for
general queries).

If you're interested in contributing to the GNU Savannah website (i.e. the code

Once you are able to run the GNU Savannah front-end PHP code locally on your computer, you can start hacking.

One possible topic to address is the current "Mark-Up" rendering, which has 
been discussed lately.
Fixing the mentioned bug, or implementing a "preview" feature would be terrific.
