Wow this is long..
I have responded to the bug at cvsnt.org, with basically the same information
I've already given here.
I will contact the FSF sysadmins to ask for their help in this.

Hi,
See answers at :
http://www.cvsnt.org/mantis/bug_view_page.php?bug_id=0000043
It looks like Savannah CVS server doesn't fulfill the capabilities its claims
to support.
Cheers,

I have been working with TortoiseCVS for months and had no problems and then a
week or so ago
I started getting errors when I tried to update. I looked around and found this
item.
I updated my TortoiseCVS to the unstable version today and then tried to do a
cvs update and got
the following the errors shown below. I am not sure how to proceed - has anyone
seen this before or does
nobody else have any problems. I can say that the newer version of TortoiseCVS
still works with my own
repository on a linux box. It is just Savannah that gives me problems.

Hi,
>Got the same problem with cygwin

Mmmh... from a recent Cygwin distribution.
C:cygwinbin>cvs -ver
Concurrent Versions System (CVS) 1.11.6 (client/server)
However, I've just filled a bug in CVSNT :

I don't use CVSNT so I don't know how it differs from GNU CVS, but there should
be a command line option that enables tracing (`-t' in GNU CVS) which might
help us debug this.
Can you try a normal CVS operation with this option added and reply with that
output?

I've had the same problem using CVSNT (from the command line), and another guy
said to me it was happening for him with TortoiseCVS (which uses CVSNT).
Neither this other guy nor I did any change in our setup, or upgraded
TortoiseCVS or CVSNT. It just suddenly stopped working.
I was using CVSNT 2.0.41a, which is the newest stable release.
Perhaps some upgrade of the CVS server software is affecting CVSNT and not
regular CVS? cvs.exe from Cygwin works fine.

This is still open. And yes, the server software has been updated (to address
recent security errata).
But, to my knowledge there are only three CVS issues in the support queue (this
one, and two related to inproper usage). If you could direct me to these
numerous reports I'd be greatful.

I would reopen this as I am not convinced that it is a client problem, as
numerous people have reported that their previously working cvs clients no
longer work and they haven't changed their environments. Have you updated the
CVS Server software on Savannah?

The "cvs.exe" delivered with TortoiseCVS version 1.6.13 seems to be the
problem. So you can close this support request! Thanks!

I have tried checking out and updating both locally and remotely and have had
no problems. I think this is most likely a problem at your end (make sure your
cvs client is up-to-date, etc).
If you continue to have ptoblems, please reply with the output from the above
cvs command with the `-t' option added (which will provide trace output to aid
in debugging this problem).
