That can be configured in the Mailman interface.
IMHO it's better to let it as it eases mail filtering a lot, but that's your
call :)

You also have the power to change that.
If you (or the project admin) have lost the list admin passwords then we can
reset them.

logged it, and then as a private list. Please make it really a public list.

You can configure this in "Admin->Mailing lists" in the mailman interface.
"Private" means invisible, public is visible.
