Follow-up Comment #12, sr#110995 (group administration):

It turns out that the private group feature only applies to the web UI.  Once
we leave the web UI and head out into the world over to the git repository
then the git repository is no different than any other.  It's public and
definitely NOT private.

And so we return to the original plan using the manually created git
repository in the private directory.
