Details:

With bce on, wide characters (which take 2 columns) corrupt the display. For
instance, this can be seen with Mutt when a subject contains a wide character.
An example is given in my Debian bug report:

The bug occurs at least with GNU Screen 4.4.0 and 4.5.0.
