M-x term is not the same as M-x shell. The former provides VT220 (or
thereabouts) emulation; the latter provides dumb terminal emulator (on
top of which is layered the standard Emacs buffer interaction
mechanisms).
Emacs is off-topic for this list, let's all go back to focusing on
Screen.
