Access environment variables in screenrc

I'd like to be able to put something like:

    shelltitle "$HOSTNAME"

in my screenrc, and have it work.

Furthermore, I'd like to access any environment variable in my screenrc that isn't a screen specific environment variable.  Is this possible?
