Follow-up Comment #1:

we already had this done for the older site.  don't you think, it is good to
add a new objecttype called news and events, and take care of this type of
content.

If this think, this can be easily done using plone, please go ahead and
finish it.  

Also, the other task was to make the opening page editable.
