Details:

When selecting versions for display, the javascript code assigns the selected
version to the A or B views in a fashion that I have been unable to unravel.

it should be predictable for the user whether the version he has just
selected will be assigned to the A or B view (this is important for the yet
unimplemented merge function). Suggested behaviour:

0 if no versions are selected, a click assigns a version to slot A
0 if one version is already selected, the next click assigns the version to
the B slot
0 if two versions are selected already, the next click unselects the version
on the B slot and replaces it with the one just selected
0 clicking on a version that was already selected unselects it. The next
click assignes the selected version to the slot previously occupied by the
version just unselected.

Some kind of indication is needed to give user feedback as to which node of
the tree is currently assigned to roles A and B.
