eureka! Thanks for your help and eyes!; it's always the simplest of
matters that i missed.

incidentally, the sample file which was my source:

/usr/share/doc/sks-1.1.5/sampleConfig/sksconf.typical

is missing this colon (which i never noticed obviously).

my conf works fine now and I've restored my .service file back to its
normal default.
