One of the things that I am planning to do with speech-dispatcher, at least to
get user testing, is to integrate speech-dispatcher as a daemon that runs per
user session. What I plan to do, is to check whether pulseaudio is running, and
if not, make a copy of the speech synthesizer config file, and modify it to
fall back to alsa.
I think alsa is the next best thing to fall back to, and everyone is using alsa
with dmix these days, so some audio output from speech-dispatcher will still be
possible.
