Speechd-el's Speller doesn't Work |

I notice that when I try to spell the current word, it just speaks the
current word; it does not spell it. I'm doing a C-e C-l C-e w and it
just speaks the current word. I turned off the reading of command
keys so I should not be interrupting anything. I verified that C-e
C-l does indeed map to speechd-speak-spell. This is with speechd-el
2.3 (the latest version I know of).
Any ideas?
