No Output from Speech-Dispatcher

Hi,

I downloaded the PulseAudio Controls, "pavucontrol" and when I bring it up
it is telling me that there is no output devices going through it. However
despite this I have speech running fine using the "Gnome-Speech-Espeak"
synth.

Could this be my problem and how would I go about fixing it.
