you mean this version http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/speech-dispatcher ?
I have dropped a quick look and it seems that it is a 0.7 version and
not the latest 0.7.1

and there e.g.
spd_say_LDADD = $(c_api)/libspeechd.la @EXTRA_SOCKET_LIBS@

could you please check the spd version you run on your debian?
Just what to be sure we are talking about the same things.
