 We can, but if we want to keep things as they are for "historical
 reasons" as Andrei sited, we have to call it build.sh instead of
 autogen.sh.  If we don't, we have to tell everyone that now they have
 to run autogen.sh, so we are doing the same thing we would do with my
 proposal, re-educating the users.

I would also rather avoid having users do this two ways, so what is
wrong with just autoreconf -i?

The other thing to consider is that most users are not building from git
anyway, so this change doesn't affect them.
