Documentation of spd_open2

All,

Fairly new to spd (have been using system calls so far, instead of the 
library) and am trying spd_open2 because of the automatic spawning (will 
spd_open do that anyway?).

I find using this function rather difficult because the documentation, both 
online (of version 0.7) and using info, is wrong.  I have second guessed 
all but the "error" parameter.  What do I do with it?  Can it be NULL?
