I am not an ArchLinux packager, but am pretty sure the packagers of
the git version in the AUR will release it soon. I will ask them.

I am curious why you say that. I just checked, libao is listed as a
dependency in both packages (in /extra and AUR). Did you try to edit
/etc/speech-dispatche/speechd.conf to include the following line?
AudioOutputMethod libao
Then indeed you will need to set default_driver in /etc/libao.conf

I am a bit puzzled here too as the Czech mbrola voices are also packaged
for Arch, and espeak-ng too.
