I think he's talking about this:

                user specified location: 0, 0
                user specified size: 804 by 1064
                program specified size: 804 by 1064
                program specified minimum size: 14 by 24
                program specified resize increment: 10 by 20
                program specified base size: 4 by 4
                window gravity: NorthWest

(this is the output from xprop on xterm)

I could imagine that the resize increments would cause gaps between
windows if the border type allows it.

However I'm against force-resizing windows to sizes they don't like.

Some applications are ok with it (xterm) and some are very stubborn
about resizing themselves (emacs, at least a while ago), which causes
very nasty fights between the window manager and the application (a
very early version of xmonad used to have that problem with emacs, if
I remember correctly. It made the desktop completely unusable).

I think the ICCCM states that the window manager should respect size
hints and many applications rely on that. (Again, I'm too lazy to
