Thanks all, a new version did the trick. I was stuck on an old version (and an old SBCL) due to this bug: https://github.com/stumpwm/stumpwm/issues/994 but it's since been fixed and I hadn't realized / upgraded as a result of it.

That said, when I run the `version` command I get "1.01" (but with a message saying it was compiled today). Based on the quicklisp dist I'd assume I was on 22.11, so i don't know why the version string is saying that.

You should install stumpwm and sbcl by following the given instructions which can be found on the official stumpwm website.
