Hello Lee,

there should already be some basic documentation included in your
synaptic - depending on your version. You can reach the help by choosing
"help" from the "help" menu.

But the colors and icons are not in the documentation right now. (There
will be some changes with the icon system in the next version)

The colors used to highlight packages by their status are defined in the
preferences. Open the preferences and choose the "columns and colors"
tab.

The "n" in the status column marks the package as "new in archive".

The main advantage of synaptic (and its backend apt) is that
dependencies are resolved automatically. If additional changes are
required a popup dialog will appear asking you if you want to queue the
additional changes.
