The old search box was quite a mess, since there was no way to inform
the user about not finding a package.

We plan to reintroduce the search widget, but this time as an instant
filter to the list of packages: While you are typing the search
expression into the entry box the list of packages will be reduced to
matching packages only (with a small delay). So if no matching package
is found the list will be empty. The latest GTK+ even provides an
infrastructure for this kind of thing, but not all distros include GTK+
