a) The mkstemp-manpage contains the suggestion to use tmpfile instead.
b) tmpfile and all other functions that I know of create a temporary file that
is rather meant for something like "memory extension" than for exchange with
scripts and other external programs. (p.e. tmpfile deletes the file as soon
as it is closed.) I don't really know why a modern program would need such a
thing. For TeXmacs, it probably is not what is needed...
