When hyphenation is set to Professional, TeXmacs uses a two pass algorithm to
optimize the paragraph breakpoints.
Can someone please tell me in plain english what the purpose of each of the two
passes is?
Can this algorithm ever result in different breakpoints than what TeX would
generate? I was told that the algorithm is basically the same but the details
are different.
I don't see in the code where two successive lines that are too tight or loose
have extra penalty. Neither do I see extra penalty for two successive lines
being hyphenated. I recall reading about these in the TeXbook. This leads me
to believe that there may be more difference in this algorithm that might have
thought in the beginning.
