It is a bit better than that. First, you can in general start an 
AppImage from your file manager without having to set up any path. 
Second, there is AppImageLauncher [1] which is  takes care of adding 
AppImages to the launcher and "storing" them in ~/applications instead 
of the download folder. Last, there is App Outlet [2] which offer an app 
store like experience for snap, flatpak and AppImage files. Click, 
install and run. It is very nice and simple.
