This works for me. Could you, please, tell which emacs-version and
tramp-version you are using? I'm a little bit surprised by the "Cannot
connect to different host" error message, this sounds like Tramp
2.0. You need Tramp 2.1 for the recipe I gave you.

Sorry, you have asked already how to check this. You must apply
"C-h v tramp-version"

yeah, I'm only on 2.0.58-pre

The latest Tramp version is http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/tramp/tramp-2.1.17.tar.gz
Installation instructions are http://www.gnu.org/software/tramp/#Installation

Anyone know how to install on Aquamacs 1.9?

I tried to install Aquamacs 2.0 preview 3 in the hope that it would have a newer tramp version, but attempting to run the binary contained in the download resulted in:

$ ./Aquamacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Aquamacs
dyld: Symbol not found: _NSFullScreenModeAllScreens
Referenced from: /Volumes/Aquamacs Emacs/./Aquamacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Aquamacs Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/AppKit

Trace/BPT trap

I'm on Mac OS X 10.4.11 if that helps...

cheers,

Chris
