Sounds to me like an error in `company-capf'. One should not call
`expand-file-name' on incomplete file names.

Maybe this could be prevented by let-setting `non-essential' to a
non-nil value in `company-capf'. This works for other packages running
completion with Tramp.

I don't use company myself, so I cannot check.
