The prompt is now "$", and not "$ " as expected. The trailing space char
is missing. Could you pls check that you have added the line to your
.profile as given?

Note the single apostrophs arround the prompt value.

I don't know whether this is the culprit, let's see. Additionally, you
might say which shell is behind /bin/sh on your remote system. Perhaps
there's another issue.
