That was it! I didn't have it installed.
When I checked all the dependencies listed in README, I made sure I had
them all. Libxml2 was one of them, and I saw that I had version 2.9.12
installed. But in my system (Debian 11), xmllint is not contained in
that package; instead, it's in libxml2-utils, which I now see it wasn't
installed.
After installing libxml2-utils, I now have xmllint in /usr/bin and
gnun is correctly reporting and showing the details of errors in po files.
