uh, I saw the version and _still_ overlooked it, built current code by habit.
yes - I see that it breaks with 9.7zd (which is installed on my VM in /usr/bin). But it doesn't break with 9.8e
At the moment I am normally running vile in /usr/local/bin on that machine since there's a problem with the dpkg script - incorrect pathname for vileget. perhaps relevant: 9.7zf had a fix for sign-extension in xml-filt.l (my note says for 64-bit, but I seem to recall this was addressing-related). -- Thomas E.
