[vile] compiling 9.8m w/ X11 on centos w/ libXt-6.0.0 fails

Running on centos, amazon virtual host.
Cores are on a Xeon, behaves as x86_64:

    Linux #1 ... SMP Mon Jun 18 18:58:52 BST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Compiling 9.8 w/ patches a..m.
tcap works fine.
attemping to compile xvile with screens X11, Athena, Xaw3d fails:

    checking for XOpenDisplay in -lX11... no
    checking for XtAppInitialize... no
    checking for XtAppInitialize in -lXt... no

    test program.  You will have to check and add the proper libraries by hand
    to makefile.

Checking /usr/lib:

$ ls -al /usr/lib/libXt*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     14 May 13 09:37 /usr/lib/libXt.so.6 -> libXt.so.6.0.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 370520 Feb 21  2013 /usr/lib/libXt.so.6.0.0

So... seems as if libXt is available. 

Q: Any known issues with vile-9.8m and libXt-6.0.0 (centos or other)?

Web searches get me no leads.
