<center><h2>Nosotros hablamos de Software Libre</h2></center>
<p>Al Software Libre a veces se le llama "Open Source". Este ha sido el
resultado de un intento de la <a
href="http://www.opensource.org/";>"Open Source Initiative"</a> (OSI)
para iniciar una campaña publicitaria en favor del Software Libre</p>
<p>La OSI se propuso salvaguardar la integridad del movimiento y
prevenir su abuso por parte de vendedores de software propietario,
introduciendo el término "Open Source" como una marca registrada para
el Software Libre; pero esta iniciativa fracasó.</p>
<p>Revisando el desarrollo de la iniciativa "Open Source" tres años
después de su lanzamiento, se descubre que las razones para preferir el
término Software Libre son ahora mas válidas. El término Software
libre, o su equivalente en otros idiomas, ofrece muchas ventajas que
explicaremos a continuación.</p>
<h3>"Software Libre" es más fácil de entender</h3>
<p>Algunas personas se quejan de que el término original "Free Software"
(Software Libre) crea ambigüedad, debido al doble sentido de "free" en
inglés: libre y gratis. Sin embargo, la mayor parte de los idiomas
tienen palabras diferentes para referirse a libertad o a precio. En
estos idiomas el término "libre" no presenta ninguna ambigüedad. Podrá
ser ambiguo en otros idiomas, incluyendo el inglés, pero en esos casos
se pueden evitar malentendidos aclarando que "free" se refiere a
libertad y no a precio.</p>
<p>El término "Open Source" se refiere a tener acceso al código
fuente. Pero el acceso al código fuente es apenas un pre-requisito para
dos de las cuatro libertades que definen al Software Libre. Muchas
personas no entienden que el acceso al código fuente no es
suficiente. "Software Libre" evita caer en esa confusión.</p>
<h3>El Software Libre se presta a menos abusos</h3>
<p>Desafortunadamente, muchas compañías han comenzado a llamar sus
productos "Open Source" cuando algunas partes del código son
visibles. Los usuarios compran este software creyendo que están
adquiriendo algo "tan bueno como GNU/Linux" ya que alega seguir los
mismos principios.</p>
<p>No debemos permitir que los vendedores de software propietario abusen
del entusiasmo de las personas de esta forma. Como la marca registrada
"Open Source" ha fracasado, no hay forma de evitar el abuso que se
hace posible por la confusión mencionada.</p>
<h3>El Software Libre está bien definido</h3>
<p>La ciencia y la filosofía han mostrado que es siempre preferible
partir de una buena definición bien clara.</p>
<p>La definición de software libre dada por la "Free Software
Foundation", con sus cuatro libertades, es la definición más clara que
existe actualmente.</p>
<h3>El Software Libre proporciona valor adicional</h3>
<p>A diferencia de Open Source, Software Libre proporciona una
filosofía y no apenas un modelo técnico para desarrollar mejor
software. Las compañías pueden aprender a beneficiarse de la filosofía
y la experiencia del Software Libre.</p>
<h3>El Software Libre ofrece libertad</h3>
<p>El Software Libre proporciona la libertad de:</p>
<ul>
<li>Ejecutar el programa, para cualquier propósito;</li>
<li>Estudiar el funcionamiento del programa, y adaptarlo a sus necesidades;</li>
<li>Redistribuir copias;</li>
<li>Mejorar el programa, y poner sus mejoras a disposición del público, para
beneficio de toda la comunidad.</li>
</ul>
<p>Como consecuencia de estas 4 libertades, el Software Libre ofrece la
libertad de aprender, libertad de enseñar, libertad de competir,
libertad de expresión y libertad de elección.</p>
<p>¡La libertad se tiene en cuenta!</p>
<p>Por todas estas razones hemos decidido conscientemente evitar el
término "Open Source", y hablar de Software Libre, o el término
equivalente en otros idiomas.</p>
<p>Le aconsejamos que tome la tome la misma decisión.</p>

special case we decided to make an exception to the rule:<br><ul> <a
href="http://perens.com/";>Bruce Perens</a>, co-founder of the Open
Source movement and author of the "Debian Free Software
Guidelines" and the "Open Source Definition" asked us
to add his name to the list and make it known that he also speaks
about Free Software and supports the "We speak about Free
Software" campaign.</ul></p>
