What about XCB[1]? I've reading it fixes some issues which xlib has ie:
multithreading. It also has (partial; could be extended I suppose)
compatibility with xlib.
William Lahti and myself are big fans of XCB. We feel it is the future
for X programming. We are hoping one of the Common LISP programmers
will come up with an equivalent to XCB for LISP, to replace crufty old
CLX.
