This was previously defined in system.h. This have been done because this definition is now part of libintl.h. Unfortunatly not every user has an actual port of GNU gettext installed with that header defining LC_MESSAGE. 2) In makeinfo/node.c there is a new function called enumerate_filename. In this function the variable: dos_file_names is defined as static and initialised with pathconf making the compiler complain. Please note the small patch fixing the issues. Maybe it is too late to change, or not worth, but I think that the shortcaption should be used consistently in @listoffloats for all the formats. And I also think that the shortcaption should be assumed to be shorter even when it is not the case, as it means that the user really wanted the shortcaption to be used. It will be truncated in info anyway if it is too long. At least accents, and "should", yes, but this is basically the same problem as supporting accents in node names, anchor names, etc., ties into 8-bit input, different fonts, blah blah blah. Not going to happen soon, at least not by me. maybe the same than the commands accepted in nodes. I attached a file with Commands are not accepted in @node names. Yes, Eli implemented a hack that allows some of them in some contexts, some of the time, but there is no official support for command names in node names, period. I am pleasantly surprised if it works, and it's not a bug if it doesn't. Anyway, thanks for the report, as always. I agree in principle ... In most cases, the commands should be fixed to really work as expected. The only exception is @footnote. I guess we should just forbid it inside @caption. Where should the footnote go to? There are two possibilities: 1) The footnote goes to the bottom of the page where the float ends up. This is both very ugly and hard to implement. 2) The footnote goes to the very end of the caption, perhaps separated with a line similar to the line above the normal footnotes at a bottom of a page. This could be implemented, but I don't think it's nice either. And it brings problem with footnote numbering. You cannot use the "global" footnote count, because of the floating. You could use *, dag, ddag, ... for numbering. To conclude, neither of these is worth the work. Let's just forbid @footnote inside @capture, OK? Speaking about it, would you agree that all of the commands you mentioned should be forbidden inside @shortcaption? This is what I would expect. But as you said below forbidding it is OK to me too (it should be mentioned in the docs, though). > Speaking about it, would you agree that all of the commands you mentioned > should be forbidden inside @shortcaption? Why? I don't think making a difference between @caption and @shortcaption will add anything from a language perspective, while it will add complexity for the implementation, especially if it is to be done consistently for all the output formats. If it simplify the implementation, it could be done, but otherwise I think it shouldn't. I don't think making a difference between @caption and @shortcaption will add anything from a language perspective, @shortcaption is intended to be used in, for example, a list of figures. I really cannot imagine any multiparagraph construct being useful. It could only cause trouble, and would most likely be an unwitting error (typo or otherwise) in the document. However, in general, we make no attempt to diagnose every impossible construct, and I don't think we need to do that here either. There are other commands whose argument is supposed to be short and simple that we don't check, and @shortcaption is certainly one of the most obscure commands around. Bottom line: do nothing special. It will fail with a mysterious error message at some point, and that's sufficient. Perhaps they'll just start work in captions the same way as in other parts of @float, ie. the footnote is placed at the bottom of the page where the @float is defined. If the float goes to another page, the footnote stays behind... We could perhaps forbid the @footnotes inside @floats altogether, to prevent peoples shooting in their foots. OTOH, if the @float is known to be placed "here", it moght be useful to have a @footnote (or a margin note) inside it. In html, - @b is handled correctly in most cases, except that it isn't applied to the multitable cells. - @samp is applied to the whole block of text, thus leading to invalid html. - @code is only applied to the first element of text before any complex command. In dvi there is a error message for a lot (all) of constructs, but there is some output anyway. However none of the styles is applied. You can try with the attached texinfo manual. Is this a surprise? That's not what those simple font-changing commands are intended for. Is there some need for them to handle huge stretches of text? For @code and @samp, at least, @example would be a better approach. As for @b, huge blocks of bold aren't a good idea anyway :). It seems to me that it could help giving a given style to a large text. For example one could want to do something similar with @float but with hand made macros, something like @macro myfloat{caption, label, text} @anchor{\label\} \text\ @strong{Float: \caption\} @end macro Pat From MAILER-DAEMON Sun May 30 20:18:42 2004 Received: from mailman by lists.gnu.org with archive (Exim 4.33) id 1BUaVm-0002gJ-Il for mharc-bug-texinfo@gnu.org; Sun, 30 May 2004 20:18:42 -0400 Received: from mailman by lists.gnu.org with tmda-scanned (Exim 4.33) id 1BUaVl-0002fn-0q for bug-texinfo@gnu.org; Sun, 30 May 2004 20:18:41 -0400 Received: from exim by lists.gnu.org with spam-scanned (Exim 4.33) id 1BUaVj-0002fb-AA for bug-texinfo@gnu.org; Sun, 30 May 2004 20:18:40 -0400 Received: from [199.232.76.173] (helo=monty-python.gnu.org) by lists.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.33) id 1BUaVj-0002fY-3v for bug-texinfo@gnu.org; Sun, 30 May 2004 20:18:39 -0400 Received: from [199.232.41.8] (helo=mx20.gnu.org) by monty-python.gnu.org with esmtp (TLSv1:DES-CBC3-SHA:168) (Exim 4.34) id 1BUaUa-0000ER-I8 for bug-texinfo@gnu.org; Sun, 30 May 2004 20:17:28 -0400 Received: from [209.61.216.22] (helo=f7.net) by mx20.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.34) id 1BUaDF-0006I6-HV for bug-texinfo@gnu.org; Sun, 30 May 2004 19:59:33 -0400 Received: (from karl@localhost) by f7.net (8.11.7-20030920/8.11.7) id i4UNxWY13909; Sun, 30 May 2004 19:59:32 -0400 Date: Sun, 30 May 2004 19:59:32 -0400 Message-Id: <200405302359.i4UNxWY13909@f7.net> From: karl@freefriends.org (Karl Berry) To: pertusus@free.fr In-Reply-To: <20040530215347.GB3090@free.fr> Cc: bug-texinfo@gnu.org Subject: Re: complex commands in simple commands X-BeenThere: bug-texinfo@gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.4 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports for the GNU Texinfo documentation system List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 31 May 2004 00:18:41 -0000 It seems to me that it could help giving a given style to a large text. Do you mean it is possible to change style of large chunks of text with other commands, or do you mean everytime it is needed texinfo will do it anyway (in table lines, for example)? The latter. As for changing style of large chunks of text, I have never seen a need to do that beyond a single paragraph.
