First you need a kernel patch: (from the dazuko sources dircetory): patch /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/fs/dcache.c patch_dpath.diff And then you need the following configuration options: ./configure --enable-syscalls \ --disable-local-dpath \ --disable-compat1 \ --mapfile=/boot/`uname -r`/System.map In your system the path to the "System.map" may differ. > I understand that the > capabilites should be a module and not in the kernel. No - that's not necessary. Kernel 2.6.24.3 doesn't offer the capabilities as module, and that works fine with dazuko. Viele Gruesse! (uname -a) On 64-bit kernels, only the 64-bit syscall table is hooked. > I tried removing the module but it says hat the moduale is in use. If the example program is running, Dazuko cannot be unloaded. If the example program wasn't running, there may be a more serious issue here. When you load Dazuko, what do you see on the console? Console messages are usually in /var/log/messages or viewable with the "dmesg" command. You should at least see messages saying that Dazuko was loaded. There are some known issues about using syscall hooking with Linux 2.6: http://dazuko.dnsalias.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#The_command_.22insmod.22_produces_a_segmentation_fault_when_I_load_a_module_with_syscall_hooking_enabled. http://dazuko.dnsalias.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#The_Linux_2.6_kernel_crashes_in_the_change_page_attr.28.29_routine_when_I_load_a_module_with_syscall_hooking_enabled. This would explain why the module is "in use" and cannot be removed. As far as I know, the latest Fedora kernels don't allow syscall hooking. I believe the only way to successfully install Dazuko on the latest Fedora is to apply the Dazuko 2.3.5-pre1 kernel patch and build a new kernel. This can be found on the Dazuko Downloads page. The included README provides more details about it. (But if you are not comfortable building a Linux kernel, this may not be an option for you.) > I am not sure how to send a reply to a thread. Usually mail clients have a "reply all" button, which will automatically add all the appropriate addresses. Another option is to do a reply, but manually change the recipient address to be the mailing list. (It is a good habit to always check the "To:" field (recipient) before posting or answering on a mailing list. Make sure the email is going where you want it go. ;) Using "reply" or "reply all" is important because it preserves mail reference information so that other people can easily track the discussion. You can verify this by checking the boot messages: $ dmesg | grep dazuko You should see that Dazuko was loaded already. > Also when I boot with the modified kernel I get fails on: > > selinux_registrer_security *there is already a secondary security module registered. > > Avahi daemon times out. This is probably because the capability module needs to be loaded. In your kernel there are now 3 security modules available: SElinux Dazuko Capability Only 2 of them can be loaded. Since you need Dazuko and you seem to need Capability, then you should disable SElinux. (If you also need SElinux, then you have a problem.) You can disable SElinux with the boot parameter "selinux=0" or you could disable it via kernel configuration and build a new kernel. The vim process does not die, but triggers another file access event which needs to get handled -- while no registered daemon is available to carry out the decision whether to deny or grant the access. So the kernel holds the file access until eternity (until the event gets handled, which won't ever happen). If there are more threads in the registered daemon, but each will open another external process as the event occurs, then it doesn't matter how many threads you have -- you always need one more thread than you have. Using processes instead of threads won't change the situation. You can verify the above explanation by dumping the access event details before starting the external process. The first innocent access will lead to an event, the daemon receives the details, starts the external process, which accesses the file, which leads to an event, which gets handled by another daemon, which starts another external process, which accesses the file, which leads to an event, etc etc ... You need to inspect the file from within the registered daemon or look into the TAF feature. Registering more processes which only inspect files but don't handle new events as they occur in the kernel will lead to other problems. Out of curiousity: I'm the author of the threaded example, but as is documented I had to write it "blindly" since I lack access to a Perl installation with threads support. So I'm interested in feedback about bugs in or improvements to the example script. Yes, I think TAF is what I'm looking for. > Out of curiousity: I'm the author of the threaded example, but as is > documented I had to write it "blindly" since I lack access to a Perl > installation with threads support. So I'm interested in feedback > about bugs in or improvements to the example script. The ExampleThr.pl as provided by dazuko.tar.gz works fine. But I noticed the Obj.pm is not able to register "TRUST_REQUEST" in sub AccessMask because the name of the variable does not start with "DAZUKO_ON_" Obj.pm (line 256) $id = 'DAZUKO_ON_' . uc($id); $id = '$Dazuko::IO::' . $id; In addition to that, "TRUST_REQUEST" is not known in IO.pm. As workaround I calculate the bitmask by myself and pass it as first element of an array to sub AccessMask. I installed AVG and rebooted. During > the boot AVG said that I need to install the Dazuko module. The AVG program may be checking /proc/modules to see if Dazuko is loaded. However, since you built it statically in the kernel it will not show up in the /proc/modules list. (The AVG software should be checking /proc/devices instead.) > by the way the menuconfig was set to accept additional security > modules. Unfortuntely this did not help because SElinux and Capabilties were built statically into your kernel. (Capabilities does not let any other security modules load after it.) > dazuko does show up in the /proc/devides file. That is a good sign. > And modprobe does not report Dazuko. Since Dazuko is not a module now, modprobe will not know anything about it. > Is there a way I can tell if Dazuko is working or if it is a problem > with AVG ? In the dazuko-2.3.5-pre1.tar.gz package there is a test program. $ tar xzvf dazuko-2.3.5-pre1.tar.gz $ cd dazuko-2.3.5-pre1 $ ./configure --without-module $ cd example_c $ make (and as root) # ./example /tmp/dazuko Then in another shell you can create the directory /tmp/dazuko and play around with copying and modifying files there. The example program should be showing the file access events. If yes, Dazuko is working. In no, then post to this list again and we can try something else. (But I expect it to be working, since the device is there.) AVG might be using a startup script that is checking /proc/modules and then reporting failure. You may want to take a look at the script to see if that is the case (and make the appropriate changes). It would also be good to report to AVG that they should be checking /proc/devices instead of /proc/modules since it is possible to use Dazuko as a static part of the kernel. The "--enable-syscalls" option will hook the 64-bit system call table. Dazuko does not support hooking the 32-bit system call table with a 64-bit kernel. If your kernel supports 32-bit applications, the 32-bit applications will not trigger file events in Dazuko. This might be acceptable for you if, for example, you are only interested in monitoring Samba shares. As long as the Samba software is 64-bit, all file events via Samba will be detected by Dazuko. Dazuko-based applications (such as anti-virus applications) can be 32-bit and will work correctly. I should have been more forthcoming in my question. Initially I tried configuring/building/loading Dazuko like this: ./configure --enable-syscalls --mapfile=/boot/System.map-2.6.18-el5 make clean; make /sbin/insmod ./dasuko.ko At this point the system "hung". Having noticed the "Important Note:" in the first attempt I then tried: ./configure --enable-syscalls --mapfile=/boot/System.map-2.6.18-el5 --sct-readonly make clean; make /sbin/insmod ./dasuko.ko At this point the system "hung". I am using Dazuko-2.3.4. I am running a stock install of RHEL5 x86_64 from their ISOs (2.6.18-8.el5) uname -a: Linux RHEL564 2.6.18.8-el5 #1 SMP x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Note: got same results with the stock RHEL5.1 x86_64 ISOs (2.6.18-53.el5). I am running it in a VMWare 6.0.2 VM on Windows XP SP2 on a Core2Duo CPU. I've scanned the archives going back about a year and didn't notice my situation addressed specifically, however I did take note of this: http://savannah.nongnu.org/support/?105824 which didn't sound hopeful. In summary, I am hoping to learn: - Is there a set of config options that will allow Dazuko to do syscall hooking on RHEL5 x86_ 64? - Should I be using a different version of Dazuko? - Would it be helpful to provide logs of the config/build output? - I don't know how to get console output of the fault running in VMWare but would be happy to try to get it if it would help (and if someone could provide a pointer to how to set this up). Thanks again in advance, Bill L. PS Note: the 32bit variants of RHEL5 seem to work OK. Further investigation (looking at the pte bits) shows that the kernel pages in question are not write protected on 32 bit RHEL5 but are write protected on 64bit RHEL5. Further, it seems that the remedy, change_page_attr (or its descendants), is where the fault is occuring for me. ----- Original Message ----- From: John Ogness To: dazuko-help@nongnu.org Cc: Bill Lutton Sent: Friday, April 11, 2008 12:08 AM Subject: Re: [Dazuko-help] RHEL5 x86_64 and syscall hooking? The "--enable-syscalls" option will hook the 64-bit system call table. Dazuko does not support hooking the 32-bit system call table with a 64-bit kernel. If your kernel supports 32-bit applications, the 32-bit applications will not trigger file events in Dazuko. This might be acceptable for you if, for example, you are only interested in monitoring Samba shares. As long as the Samba software is 64-bit, all file events via Samba will be detected by Dazuko. Dazuko-based applications (such as anti-virus applications) can be 32-bit and will work correctly. The problem is that you can only use 2 of the 3 LSM modules. Since you need both Dazuko and Capabilities, you can not use SElinux. We are working on changing this, but right now that is the situation. If you don't specifically use SElinux, then you probably don't need it. I know that Red Hat has modified their kernel to prevent syscall hooking. (The change_page_attr() function was modified to not allow requests to change read-only to read-write.) But I didn't think was included in the 2.6.18 kernel. Perhaps the 64-bit version of their kernel already includes this change. > - Is there a set of config options that will allow Dazuko to do > syscall hooking on RHEL5 x86_64? The "official" (from me) recommended method is to patch the kernel using the new Linux 2.6 kernel patch: http://www.dazuko.org/files/patch-linux26-dazuko-2.3.5-pre1.tar.gz and then building a new kernel. (See the README included in the package.) This allows Dazuko to be built statically in the kernel. The syscall hooking for Linux 2.6 was not developed by me and I do not want to spend time trying to make sure it hacks around the latest Linux kernel hardening. If someone else wants to get it fixed, I will gladly accept patches. > - Should I be using a different version of Dazuko? If you are willing to build a new kernel, the "Dazuko as kernel patch" option is the best: - it doesn't modify existing kernel code - it doesn't use any "tricks" to get access to file access events - it is supported and recommended by me (the current Dazuko maintainer) The only drawbacks (also mentioned in the README) are: - it requires building a new kernel - it is only possible to use SElinux _or_ Capabilities, but not both > - Would it be helpful to provide logs of the config/build output? Posting them to the dazuko-devel mailing list would probably be more effective. That's the list where the developers are registered. Perhaps someone will provide a fix. > - I don't know how to get console output of the fault running in > VMWare but would be happy to try to get it if it would help (and > if someone could provide a pointer to how to set this up). In VMWare I believe there is a configuration option to have serial output redirected to a file on the host system. Then you just need to boot the kernel with the console also redirected to the serial port and it should be dumped to the file. The kernel boot parameter would look something like this: console=ttyS0,9600n8 You can specify the boot parameter multiple times and the console will be output to all of them: console=tty0 console=ttyS0,9600n8 John Ogness -- Dazuko Maintainer From MAILER-DAEMON Tue Apr 15 10:13:35 2008 Received: from mailman by lists.gnu.org with archive (Exim 4.43) id 1Jlluh-0007Bo-Pk for mharc-dazuko-help@gnu.org; Tue, 15 Apr 2008 10:13:35 -0400 Received: from mailman by lists.gnu.org with tmda-scanned (Exim 4.43) id 1Jllug-0007BT-6p for dazuko-help@nongnu.org; Tue, 15 Apr 2008 10:13:34 -0400 Received: from exim by lists.gnu.org with spam-scanned (Exim 4.43) id 1Jlluf-0007BH-4N for dazuko-help@nongnu.org; Tue, 15 Apr 2008 10:13:33 -0400 Received: from [199.232.76.173] (helo=monty-python.gnu.org) by lists.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1Jllue-0007BE-VU for dazuko-help@nongnu.org; Tue, 15 Apr 2008 10:13:33 -0400 Received: from gnukia.org ([85.214.67.64] helo=cbs.gnukia.org) by monty-python.gnu.org with esmtps (TLS-1.0:DHE_RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:32) (Exim 4.60) (envelope-from ) id 1Jllue-00070K-Jz for dazuko-help@nongnu.org; Tue, 15 Apr 2008 10:13:32 -0400 Received: from cbs (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by localhost (Postfix) with ESMTP id 51746EC4003 for ; Tue, 15 Apr 2008 16:13:53 +0200 (CEST) Received: from [172.16.1.174] (mail.collax.com [82.194.105.242]) by cbs.gnukia.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3B0FCEC4002 for ; Tue, 15 Apr 2008 16:13:52 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <4804B803.4010603@visionswerk.org> Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2008 16:13:23 +0200 From: Thomas Alex User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 (X11/20080227) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: dazuko-help@nongnu.org X-Enigmail-Version: 0.95.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Filtered: By ProxSMTP X-Anti-Virus: Kaspersky Anti-Virus for MailServers 5.5.33/RELEASE, bases: 15042008 #633711, status: clean X-detected-kernel: by monty-python.gnu.org: Linux 2.6, seldom 2.4 (older, 4) Subject: [Dazuko-help] TAF API X-BeenThere: dazuko-help@nongnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: dazuko-help.nongnu.org List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2008 14:13:34 -0000 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello, I have some problems with the TAF API. I have two little test programs: The first one based on example_mt.c registers at DaZuKo for the events DAZUKO_ON_OPEN and DAZUKO_TRUST_REQUEST. Getting the DAZUKO_ON_OPEN event it will call the second program. The second program requests trusted access using dazukoRegisterTrusted("myGroup","myToken",DAZUKO_TRUST_CHILDREN). As documented in README.trusted, registering trusted successfully and using the flag DAZUKO_TRUST_CHILDREN the second program should not generate any event (except DAZUKO_TRUST_REQUEST). But in my case, when the first program get a DAZUKO_ON_OPEN event, it calls the second program which registers trusted successfully and then generates another process which will open a file. At this point a new DAZUKO_ON_OPEN event is generated which should not be. I know it's a bit confusing, but probably someone has an idea how this could work. At this point > a new DAZUKO_ON_OPEN event is generated which should not be. The order seems to be a bit mixed up here. Your second program should register as trusted _before_ your first program starts processing OPEN events. The registration process generates an event of its own, so this must be done without any other pending events. The intended order is: 1. first program starts, sets access mask to allow registered requests 2. second program starts, requests trusted access (and is successful because the first program grants trusted access) --- now everything is ready --- 3. first program sets access mask (and include paths) to detect file access events 4. when events arrive, they are passed to the second program for processing (the second program (and optionally its children) will not generate file access events) Typically the first and second program will communicate using pipes, sockets, or shared memory. Perhaps there is a problem with your kernel sources. I see nothing here that implies the Dazuko patch is causing the problem. Could you post your original security/Makefile? You'll probably need to manually insert the Dazuko line, but that shouldn't be a problem. Could you post your original security/Makefile?
You'll probably need
to manually insert the Dazuko line, but that
shouldn't be a
problem. If I see what the Makefile looks like, I
can tell you exactly
what line you need to add (and where).
