It seems like there are some jabber clients out there who support gpg encryption and I was wondering if anyone ever integrated this functionality into ERC. Something like this: * Setup ** BBDB - [X] IRC Field: Nickname of Person - [X] GPG Field: Client/Mail supports GPG - [X] ID Field: GPG-Key ID * Sending a line to Person A ** Press Enter ** Hook saves Message to a tmpbuffer [erc-send-pre-hook?] ** Identify Person A *** Lookup Nick in BBDB *** Fetch GPG-Key ID ** Encrypt tmpBuffer with GPG Key (GPG-Agent!) ** Send encrypted tmpBuffercontent instead of line Decrypting would be done with erc-insert-pre-hook I guess. I guess this would be possible, all with the tools emacs already provides. Thus, I expect someone to have written some elisp already. Whenever I thought "This would be nice!", it has always been done already ;). I would advise looking at “Off-the-Record” (OTM) and especially the paper that explains why they think OpenPGP isn’t well suited for instant messaging: http://www.cypherpunks.ca/otr/ There’s an unofficial Bitlbee branch that adds support for OTR: http://khjk.org/bitlbee-otr/ http://bugs.bitlbee.org/bitlbee/ticket/115 Adding OTM support into ERC proper would be better since it would make it usable on IRC as well. Any takers? :-) Thanks, Ludo’. However, I already have a hard time to convince my contacts to use any encryption software :(, so I'd prefer just one implementation. I also encourage them to use a *strong* mantra, so even if a secret key is compromised and consequently discarded for future use, I still think gpg offers pretty good privacy. Deniability is not a prime goal of mine, in fact I am not sure it is a goal at all. And: gpg has a large userbase, lots of people depend on it so I think (hope) it is well maintained. (The whole debian infrastructure depends on gpg.) > Adding OTM support into ERC proper would be better since it would make > it usable on IRC as well. Any takers? :-) That was my point: I think (!) it would be much easier to implement gpg, because it is already well integrated into emacs with easypg.
