No, Gotmail is not insecure. You posted a debug log that contained your password to a public mailing list; that is the breach. I don't maintain Gotmail anymore, but I'll forward this on to the appropriate list; the maintainers probably should ensure that passwords are no longer being included in cURL calls, so they won't end up in logs. Some work was done on that exact issue a long time ago, but it may have crept back in with changes since then. Most importantly, the maintainers should emphasize that no one should send a log file like that to a public place without knowing what's in it. The instructions to star out or change passwords that appear in logs should be more visible. Again, Gotmail was not cracked, and it is not insecure. It may be a little loose with what it puts in debug logs, and that should probably be fixed, but you as a user have a responsibility not to blindly send out logs generated by _any_ program on your system; _anything_ could be in there. Since you changed your password, this will not be a problem for you anymore unless you send your password to a public list again. -- paul P.S. Someone emailed us some time ago about this issue, using similar language; it probably is the same person. I told them pretty much what I just told you. I personally feel they went too far in breaking in to your account, when it would have sufficed to inform you of the need to change your password. I have been using gotmail for at least a year and have been very satisfied with it. We use it for our small network here pulling about a half dozen Hotmail accounts. Each user runs a script that pulls their account and send them to postfix to deliver to the user with spam checking (Spamassassin) and virus detection (Clamav). Recently, I have noticed an excessive number of temporary files remaining in the /tmp directory every day. There is over one hundred for the last two days. They seem to be related to error in the gotmail log but I can not say there is a one-to-one correspondence to errors. Does gotmail delete temporary files on errors? If not, should it? If it does, what needs to be configured? Can I delete the temporary files after gotmail completes execution? I currently delete them after two days. I was in the process of adding an additional configuration parameter to my version of gotmail when I looked into the temporary file problem. I believe that I found the problem. There are several "die" statements that can result if things go wrong. "die" simply prints the messages and quits. I don't believe it calls the signal handler and from the remaining temporary files, that would be a good assumption. In the attached gziped file, I have added "doCleanTempFiles" calls which for the last two days has not left a temporary file and seems to retrieve mail from Hotmail for several account here. I also added a "summary" configuration parameter to gotmail for both the configuration file and command line argument. When specified it will always print a summary of unread messages by folders. I was looking to capture a metric of files downloaded and this was my first attempt for a quick and dirty solution. I followed the dispText subroutine and added a dispSummary subroutine. After a week, all temporary files are removed. The problem was if pulling the page off the server failed the program would "die" and leave these files. These failures were related mostly to server busy or communication issues. The attached file is a version of gotmail that incorporates the following: 1. Properly clean up temporary file upon errors. 2. Added summary to the configuration options (--summary) which will print a summary of each folder's unread message count. It defaults to off so that it should not impact existing configurations. I use this in a cron job to see if gotmail is pulling any mail off of the server and for other metrics. These changes were tested for about a week on a network consisting of three users and about a half-dozen hotmail accounts. Anyone who wishes to use this program should perform their own tests before adding it to any automated processing script. I would like to offer these changes for the current gotmail baseline. Please let me know if there is anything further you need to accomplish this. Thanks, Jens I am not a real programmer, I only play the part... --=-CAInvkBUVHNoFv8BEnzd Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=gotmail_new.gz Content-Type: application/x-gzip; name=gotmail_new.gz This list isn't dead yet, but I'd like to get it moved over to the SourceForge mailing list at some point. I'm trying to think of a painless way to do this... Maybe make gotmail-list@nongnu.org a member of the SourceForge mailing list? As to the original post, I'd need some more details to find the problem. Thanks! I'm having a problem now and then, though. It appears that Hotmail's thro= wing up it's 'too busy' page and is confusing gotmail. I get the following err= or: curl: (3) malformed curl: (3) malformed curl: (3) malformed curl: (3) malformed An error was encountered getting the page. Command was curl "/toobusy.html/HoTMail" -b /tmp/fileM3xHZzgotmail_cookies -c /tmp/fileM3xHZzgotmail_cookies -s -S -i -m 600 -D /tmp/file4J9N4mgotmail_headers -A "Mozilla/4.73 [en] (Win98; I)" at /usr/bin/gotmail line 551. Is there a chance of recognizing this in the gotmail script and either ig= noring it or giving a more meaningful message? Maybe even a new configuration parameter to tell whether or not to report this as an error. If gotmail r= uns into the 'too busy' page, I really don't care to hear about it, since the= email will get picked up in 15 minutes when gotmail runs again. I don't want to forward all cron errors to /dev/null because I would still like to know a= bout any _real_ errors. Since the 'too busy' page is not reproducible, it would be hard to test. Thanks! I'm having a problem now and then, though. It appears that Hotmail's throwing up it's 'too busy' page and is confusing gotmail. I get the following error: curl: (3) malformed curl: (3) malformed curl: (3) malformed curl: (3) malformed An error was encountered getting the page. Command was curl "/toobusy.html/HoTMail" -b /tmp/fileM3xHZzgotmail_cookies -c /tmp/fileM3xHZzgotmail_cookies -s -S -i -m 600 -D /tmp/file4J9N4mgotmail_headers -A "Mozilla/4.73 [en] (Win98; I)" at /usr/bin/gotmail line 551. Is there a chance of recognizing this in the gotmail script and either ignoring it or giving a more meaningful message? Maybe even a new configuration parameter to tell whether or not to report this as an error.
