I've already read the previous thread about PulseAudio, which took place
months before I joined this mailing list. I'm reopening the debate, since
one aspect wasn't previously covered.
I've instructed my computer to automatically route OSS through ALSA and ALSA
through PulseAudio. This seems to cause the unwanted loss of some initial
audio packets in some applications.
For example, while I'm talking to someone via Linphone, I might hear them
say 'correct' instead of what they actually said ('incorrect'). I've used
this extreme case to illustrate the confusion that can be caused when the
beginnings of words are truncated.
In my experience, this problem usually goes away when the application gets
native support for PulseAudio. Mainly for this reason, I'm hoping that
Linphone will do the same. People have whined about PulseAudio in the past,
but I think it's great these days.

My laptop is multi-homed when I am at work.
eth0: has default gateway (nat'edInternet)
eth1: has network with asterisk server (called voicenet)
Linphone seems unable to talk to the directly connected asterisk
server on the eth1 network, though other softphones such as ekiga,
zoiper, x-lite work fine.
Looking at the linphone log I see a Via statement which always
includes the eth0 ip address.
This seems suspicious too me.
I am wondering if the 'route' setting may help, but I am not certain
what to put there.

Hi Monali,
As far as I now, ethernet connections are not very well handled by the
Android network manager. Today, Linphone for Android rely on network states
reported by Android to send register messages. Linphone for Android could be
easily modified to automatically detect network state (like in the Linux
version). Just remove calls to Linphone.setNetworkStateReachable and set
the auto_net_state_mon attribute to 1 in the sip section of linphonerc.
Cheers
Jehan

Hi Monali,
As far as I now, ethernet connections ar=
e not very well handled by the Android network manager. Today, Linphone for=
Android rely on =A0network states reported by Android to send register mes=
sages. Linphone for Android could be easily modified to automatically detec=
t network state (like in the Linux version). Just remove calls to Linphone.=
setNetworkStateReachable=A0and set the=A0auto_net_state_mon attribut=
e to 1 in the sip section of linphonerc.

Hi Ronald,
Dual stack is not supported unfortunately...
Starting two instances should be possible if you provide them two
different config files, which should be possible by passing a fake HOME
env variable to one of them:
HOME=/home/user/linphone_2nd_config linphone-3 --verbose
and configure the first one to use a different port than 5060.
Hope that helps!

Hi,
I've downloaded the org.linphone.apk from the internet and tried to run =
it but it is getting crashed. Is there any source code available which i =
can cross-compile according to my system requirement. I'm porting it in =

Hi Monali,
As far as I now, ethernet connections are not very well handled by the
Android network manager. Today, Linphone for Android rely on network =
states
reported by Android to send register messages. Linphone for Android could =
be
easily modified to automatically detect network state (like in the Linux
version). Just remove calls to Linphone.setNetworkStateReachable and set
the auto_net_state_mon attribute to 1 in the sip section of linphonerc.
Cheers
Jehan

In my opinion pulseaudio has a too big latency and is not appropriate for

Rekha,
I can't say I recall seeing before that you want to run 3.1.0. That
is quite old, I no longer have a copy of it around. I am surprised
that you would need to upgrade anything on Slack 13 to run that.
I got 3.2.1 working on Slack 13.0 without upgrading atk or cairo.
Cheers.

I cannot report any latency issues with PulseAudio. The only
confusing thing is to get Linphone to function at all---but that is
the same problem for almost all applications.
The best way to keep PulseAudio and linphone from blocking each other
is to have all three audio devices in Linphone (input, output, ring)
use the default ALSA device. My setup is standard Ubuntu, in which
the default ALSA device is routed to PulseAudio.
To address Simon's question, the drawback in that setup is that the
ringer device is the same as regular audio output. I like to speak on
the headset but have trouble hearing the faint ringing on the headset
when I am not wearing it.
I think that problem might go away if PulseAudio was supported directly.

The external microphone has a standard mini-jack which is plugged into
the side of the netbook and thus (I assume) into the sound card.
The internal microphone (which linphone didn't see) is not a usb
microphone (according to lsusb) but beyond that, I can't say.
However, I cannot now reproduce the problem. I seem to have solved it
by fiddling with my alsa mixer settings, and I cannot now get it to fail
again. So treat it as a suspect report at the moment: it may well be
that different applications use different inputs (I notice that with
linphone the "digital" capture control governs input volume, but with
other applications it seems not to do so).

The PulseAudio latency interferes more with AEC (acoustic echo
cancellation). Sometimes even Skype, that has one of the best AEC
implementations, cannot do a good job when using PulseAudio.

Some people might dispute this statement, but PulseAudio is the Linux sound
server of the future. For me, its biggest strength is the GUI approach that
makes configuration much simpler. Since Linphone is a GUI application, it
makes sense to liaise with a sound server that has a native GUI.
In my opinion pulseaudio has a too big latency and is not appropriate for

Any current latency issues will probably be resolved in future releases of
PulseAudio. If there are no other significant problems, I think it'd be
wise for Linphone to support PulseAudio now, rather than continuing to lag
behind the times. Thanks for taking my opinions on this matter into
consideration.

me, its biggest strength is the GUI approach that makes configuration much =
simpler.=C2=A0 Since Linphone is a GUI application, it makes sense to liais=

Any current latency issues will probably be r=

o now, rather than continuing to lag behind the times.=C2=A0 Thanks for tak=

linphone is also a CLI app used on embedded devices, often without a display.
In this case it is often started from an init script. PulseAudio is a _very_
bad fit in this situation as it expects a logged in user to be the only user
of the sound devices, and the only way to get it to work is to use it in a
mode that's deprecated by the developers because it presents a security risk.
This problem isn't limited to embedded systems either - I use the squeezeslave
squeezebox client as a daemon on most of my boxes at home which makes
PulseAudio a nonstarter for me.

Then wait until they fix the latency. I would have to reevaluate PulseAudio to
see if its CPU-hogging tendencies on integer-only cores like older ARMs have
been cured, another problem that made it a nonstarter for embedded users.
If PulseAudio support is included it should be as well as ALSA, not instead
of.

Hi all pulseaudio supporters and debaters,
I've written a pulse audio backend to mediastreamer2 (linphone's media
engine). Of course it comes together with alsa, not as a replacement.
And it's optionnal in compilation.
But actually the main problem I have now is that I can't get pulseaudio
to play a single sound on my laptop, even with paplay.
Absolutely no errors. I can see the player connection with various
pulseaudio tools. Volumes are nonzero.
But I just hear silence....
I have a debian unstable updated last week.
Anyone has ideas ?
Thanks for your suggestions.

Simon:
When you select devices for recording and playback, there should be one
called "pulse". If you do not find this, then you can put the following
in either ~/.asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf:
pcm.pulse {
type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
type pulse
}
This will define the pulse devices to PulseAudio, although I would
suspect on the latest debian they would be there already. A good way to
test is with gnome-sound-recorder.
There is also the Sound Preferences. You should make sure that the
PulseAudio Sound Server is selected there. Also make sure that
pulseaudio is running. I have seen situations where after logging in it
wasn't although this was probably on older versions of pulseaudio.
Ubuntu 10.04 is on on a version of pulseaudio 0.9.22 while SLED 11 SP1
RC3 is at pulseaudio 0.9.21.
You can use:
pulseaudio --start
to make sure pulseaudio is running. It may also print out error or
warning messages to let you know if there are some configuration issues.
Also be aware that to use PulseAudio with ALSA you need the
libasound2-plugins package.

This rings vague bells from the past. I should try starting alsamixer
and going through each of the channels to see if one is off and
pulseaudio is trying to use it. If you have a ctl.!default line
in /etc/asound.conf for pulse, you will need to comment it out to do
this.

Thanks for your help Chris.
Apparently by magic after restarting my pc pulseaudio is now working
fine.
I could finally test my pulseaudio support, and it is now working fine,
with a very reasonable latency.
Everyone can now use it by checking out the lastest git sources.

Simon,
Getting PulseAudio to work for the first time can be an aggravating
experience. If pulseaudio has no sound, you may wish to check that
your audio devices are not being blocked by other processes.
Flashplayer often grabs the devices. My first suggestion would be to
close your browser.
Regards,
Felix
