I've updated source trees of lynx by patches and got an error at compiling 2.8.6dev.17 because scripts/cfg_path.sh was not executable. I should use $(SHELL) as a prefix in the makefile to work around this. The usual reason for doing that is to work around one of the limitations of CVS (it doesn't preserve permissions - or timestamps). Some packagers have complained when I have scripts that rely on the permissions since they check the distribution into CVS. However, the scripts in the tarball are executable since that's the way the permissions are defined. Using patch, there is no way that I know to propagate the permissions in this way. (I had thought most packagers started from a tarball rather than using patch - but then see above for CVS limitations). > I downloaded full source then it seemed all files in scripts > directory were executable. ... > Is there any chance that even with a patch, one could get > correct permission of files? For instance ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/9/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/lynx-2.8.5-11.i386.rpm might be for an older version of Red Hat. ("Fedora" is more likely). -- Thomas E. Some people assert that sections 2c is a requirement for the program to print the information that it is GPL'd when it is run. If one grants that view, that is advertising for the GPL. -- Thomas E. Here's an example of use of Lynx as a fallback option in T.V. Raman's talking EMACS system. I hope that the bounce + Outlook don't mess up the code embedded below. -----Original Message----- From: T. V. Raman (by way of Lloyd Rasmussen ) [mailto:noreply-comment@blogger.com] Sent: Friday, February 24, 2006 8:33 AM To: lras@sprynet.com Subject: [emacspeak The Complete Audio Desktop] Emacspeak: Connecting Lynx And W3 Emacs/W3 is still the best Web page rendering option inside Emacspeak given the ability to apply XSL transforms, as well as obtaining aural styling via ACSS. However W3's url handling layer often breaks when faced with multiple redirects, especially when some of these happen through the Host: HTTP header. Additionally, HTTPS authentication sometimes fails mysteriously in the presence of redirects. In many of these cases, lynx happily fetches the pages correctly; however you're then stuck using a fairly weak auditory interface in that Emacspeak degrades to being aterminal level screenreader. An effective solution to this problem is to use lynx within an Emacs terminal, and after finding the content that is worth reading, handing off that content to Emacs/W3. The next few paragraphs show how. The lynx-site.cfg File This is where you add site-specific configurations. Here are the lines I have in my lynx-site.cfg to integrate lynx and Emacs. Before you use any of this, make sure you have executed M-x server-start in your running Emacs, and make sure that all is well by experimenting with emacsclient to ensure that external programs can hand-off editting tasks to the currently running Emacs. #site defaults #for bookshare: DOWNLOADER:BKS Unpack:bks.pl %s %s:TRUE PRINTER:Edit:emacsclient %s:TRUE KEYMAP:???:EDITTEXTAREA # use external editor to edit a form textarea PRETTYSRC:TRUE SOURCE_CACHE:MEMORY SAVE_SPACE:~/.wget/ BOLD_HEADERS:TRUE PRINTER:W3:emacsclient -e '(w3-open-local "%s")':TRUE Below, I'll describe what each of the above lines do: * DOWNLOADER:BKS Unpack:bks.pl %s %s:TRUE The above line creates an additional item in the download menu that invokes the BookShare unpacker. Script bks-unpack.pl invokes the BookShare unpack tool with the appropriate options. * PRINTER:Edit:emacsclient %s:TRUE This creates an Edit item in the print menu. Invoking this menu item causes the current page to be handed off to Emacs for editting. If you want to edit the source, first switch to source view by hitting \ before invoking print. * KEYMAP:???:EDITTEXTAREA# use external editor to edit a form textarea This sets lynx up so that when editting a multiline textarea, you can hand off the editting job to Emacs. This is particularly useful for editting Wiki pages. Replace the ?? with the desired key sequence. * PRETTYSRC:TRUE SOURCE_CACHE:MEMORY The above two settings make the edit source functionality more pleasant to use. * PRINTER:W3:emacsclient -e '(w3-open-local "%s")':TRUE The above creates a W3 menu item in the print menu. Invoking this causes Emacs/W3 to display the current page --- again switch to source view before invoking this so that Emacs/W3 gets handed the HTML markup. It takes me 15 sec or so from the time I click "Log In" at www.gmail.com until my inbox appears, including the invalid-cookie-prompting and SSL-certificate-prompting time. Also, I am a big fan of the TEXTBOXES_NEED_ACTIVATION option as I use Links and form fields are numbered navigation. I can't edit the lynx.cfg file on all the machines I use, and I dislike editing lynx.cfg anyway because the file is so big. 1. Is it possible you could make the message display time and TEXTBOXES_NEED_ACTIVATION configurable through the Options screen? 2. Also, is it possible you could make "Save options to disk" the default? If you go the [O]ptions form route it overwrites .lynxrc, which is the main reason it does not write to disk by default. This was discussed here last year. Read the autogenerated .lynxrc file LYOPTIONS generates. The ssl warnings mean you need to install certificates correctly on your system; see http://lynx.isc.org/current/lynx-2-8-6/docs/README.sslcerts and follow the steps. lynx -tna is a command line option for TEXTFIELDS, lynx -nopause is probably what you want for the delays... lynx --help|less shows you everything. The cookie accepting requires file storage and persistence ... In general the lynx browser will speed up very nicely for users who take the time to learn to make the required changes. Since not all users are ready or able or want to run lynx in super fast mode, only some vendors ship a tuned current version of lynx. -Stef http://caunter.ca/contact.html On Wed, 22 Feb 2006, Jason Spiro wrote: > Hi, > > A pet peeve of mine regarding Lynx is the fact that "Using > http://...", "Location URL is not absolute", and "Accepting all > cookies from..." display for a full second each. That doesn't sound right: ".lynxrc" normally contains only the data that is written by the options form. Perhaps you are talking about doing something like export LYNX_CFG=$HOME/.lynxrc That would work (I think) because the data that the reader for lynx.cfg is in a different format, but it's not the expected behavior for lynx. > If you go the [O]ptions form route it overwrites .lynxrc, which is the main > reason it does not write to disk by default. This was discussed here last > year. Read the autogenerated .lynxrc file LYOPTIONS generates. Most of the Options form selections are data that the user might want to change during a session. I'm not sure that TEXTFIELDS_NEED_ACTIVATION fits into that category, though arguably "any" setting is a candidate. However, note that the options menu could grow as large as lynx.cfg if we added all possibilities. -- Thomas E. It isn't right at all (sorry all) ... I suppose I was thinking of lynx -cfg=~/.lynxrc which I've used as an alias when I don't like a shell provider's setup. > >> If you go the [O]ptions form route it overwrites .lynxrc, which is the main >> reason it does not write to disk by default.
