I am having trouble installing AUCTeX 11.83 from My .emacs file is the following.

(add-to-list 'load-path (concat (getenv "HOME") "/emacs/"))

(load "auctex.el" nil t t)
(load "preview-latex.el" nil t t)

(setq TeX-auto-save t)
(setq TeX-parse-self t)
(setq-default TeX-master nil)

(eval-after-load 'info '(add-to-list 'Info-directory-list "~/info"))

The version information is below.

I am a non-privileged user working on a university machine. Under section "6 Installation for non-privileged users" of INSTALL file it talks about --prefix option and load-path variable but it does not say anything about --with-texmf-dir option (it says "If you want others to be able to share your installation, you should configure it using `--without-texmf-dir'" but I don't want to share my installation). Therefore, the first time my installation failed because "make install" tried to install files in /usr/share/texmf directory which was prohibited. It would probably be helpful to mention this option in the section for non-privileged users.

Second, when I load a file without \begin{document} and compile it, AUCTeX does not ask me for the name of the main file even though TeX-master is nil, TeX-auto-save is t, and TeX-parse-self is t. Therefore, TeX produces an error on the first \chapter command in the file.

Third, even though I have the line about Info-directory-list in my .emacs file, when I select in the menu to read AUCTeX manual, I get the one for AUCTeX 11.55 from the machine-wide place somewhere in /usr/share, not from ~/info. In fact, when I look the value of Info-directory-list variable, all elements in the list start with /usr/share.

I would greatly appreciate any help.
