TeX-PDF-mode could be made to take a prefix argument which would then
be used to set something like TeX-PDF-variant (since TeX-PDF-mode is a
proper minor mode, it should probably not be something different from
nil or t itself). Or we create some other way of setting
TeX-PDF-variant.
I think something like this is on the TODO list, anyway, but there is
no timeframe for its implementation except "hopefully before 12.0".
