Yes, I agree. But you usually do this (I think) not by typing a \ but by
using C-c C-m (TeX-insert-macro) or one of the predefined ones, e.g. the
font commands C-c C-f *. With my proposed patch these continue to wrap the
selected text. Only when you type a \ it works similar to any other
self-inserting command.
