Thanks David, are you suggesting that I modify preview.sty so that it uses
\scalebox to render \includegraphics macros in a smaller scale? If so, could
you give me a few more pointers? I have never modified a style file before.

Many thanks - I think this would add greatly to usability of AUCTEX (at
least for me)
