bootstrap broken ?

Hmm, I can no longer bootstrap bison on i686-pc-linux-gnu.
It still worked yesterday..
I'm using autoconf-2.59 and tried automake-1.8, 1.9 and 1.9.1. 
Should I be using a different combination?
The trace below is for automake-1.8. Other versions yield slightly
different error messages but the outcome is the same.
