Those are the same versions I'm running.  Also, my Autoconf is invoking 
GNU M4 1.4.7.

I'm using Slackware 10.2.0 on an i686.

I just checked out Bison from CVS and ran bootstrap without trouble.

I don't recall ever seeing this error.
