I'm not seeing this.

I have Autoconf 2.61, Automake 1.10, Coreutils 5.97, and M4 1.4.10.  If 
your M4 is up to date, then I'll try upgrading the other packages 
(Autoconf is likely where the trouble is) to see if that breaks make check 
for me.  What M4 do you have?
