Unable to su root

From: Phil Welch
Subject: Unable to su root

Although cause and effect are not clear, it seems that
after a SuSE update, or perchance, after changing both
the root and (single) user passwords, that I am now
unable to su from a normal user due to incorrect
password.

However, although I cannot su with the root password,
I can login with the root password.

The user is a member of users and wheel.

I have spent the past several hours doing yahoo and
google searches, but to no avail. I'm running SuSE
9.0 and find that many folks have had similiar
problems for the past several releases. The typical
help response is to make the user a member of wheel,
which is already the case in this instance.

sudoers is setup to allow members of the wheel group
to su.

Until yesterday, I have been able to su without
difficulty, but at this point know of no reason for
this new problem and can think of only the SuSE online
update and password changes as potentials since
nothing else I did yesterday would, to my knowledge,
have any effect.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best Regards,
